2012 Preakness Stakes

The 137th Preakness Stakes will take place tomorrow at 5:00PM ET. You can bet on this race at just about any horse track in the country and also several different places online. In addition to that, you can also watch the Preakness on NBC. The broadcast will begin before the big race.

The big question is whether the Kentucky Derby winner, I’ll Have Another, can win the second leg of the triple crown. He is currently not the favorite to win. That honor goes to the runner-up at the Kentucky Derby, Bodemeister, at 8-5. I’ll Have Another has the 2nd best odds at 5-2. Dullahan, the horse that finished 3rd in the Kentucky Derby, will not be in this race.

Other than that, the next best two horses are Creative Cause and Went the Day Well at 6-1. There are only 6 horses in the Preakness that ran in the Kentucky Derby. Daddy Nose Best (12-1) and Optimizer (30-1) are the other two horses. The rest of the field are not really viewed as contenders. Here is how the horses will appear at the gates:

1. Tiger Walk (30-1)
2. Teeth of the Dog (15-1)
3. Pretension (30-1)
4. Zetterholm (20-1)
5. Went the Day Well (6-1)
6. Creative Cause (6-1)
7. Bodemeister (8-5)
8. Daddy Nose Best (12-1)
9. I’ll Have Another (5-2)
10. Optimizer (30-1)
11. Cozetti (30-1)

The track is 1 3/16 miles. That is 1/16 of a mile longer than the Kentucky Derby. That might be favorable for Bodemeister, who held the lead for much of the Kentucky Derby before I’ll Have Another gained several lengths down the last stretch to catch Bodemeister and win by less than half a length.

Bodemeister seems to be the horse that has the greatest stamina, which probably will make all the difference for the Preakness and the extra sixteenth of a mile.

Because of the light field of contenders, many people seem like they are going to sit out on the betting this time around. I’m telling you that this probably will be a mistake. This seems like it is going to be one of the best races to try to get an Exacta, Trifecta or Superfecta.

If you exclude the 5 horses that have odds of 20-1 or greater, you can really try to find value in boxing or wheeling your bets. Here is what you need to consider:

1) I guarantee that Bodemeister will be in the top 3 of the Preakness barring something expected. You should try boxing Bodemeister (7) with I’ll Have Another (9), Creative Cause (6), Went the Day Well (5) and Daddy Nose Best (8).

2) The one horse I don’t know that much about is Teeth of the Dogs (2) at 15-1 odds. You may want to hedge your bets to include this horse as a place or show.

3) I’ll Have Another will probably not win the Preakness. I’m guessing that this horse won’t have enough stamina to come from that far back in consecutive races. I also don’t think that trying to run out front will help as that last 1/16th will cause trouble.

Of course, when I say that you need to find value, I mean that your wager should be worth the risk. If you decide to play Bodemeister (7) and I’ll Have Another (9) as your boxed Exacta, you might win less than or equal to the amount that you are wagering. The odds that one of those two horses doesn’t finish or place is higher than that, so this is a bad bet to make.

2012 Preakness Stakes Prediction

Here is my official picks for this year’s Preakness:

Win – Bodemeister (7)
Place – Went the Day Well (5)
Show – Creative Cause (6)
4th Place – I’ll Have Another (9)
5th Place – Teeth of the Dog (2)

I am going to be Wheeling Bodemeister (7) as winner with 5, 6 and 9 for my Superfecta.

I will also be Boxing 7, 5 and 6 for my Trifecta.

To hedge my bets, I am going to be placing a bet on I’ll Have Another (9) to Win.

My final bet for the Preakness is that I am going to Box Went the Day Well (5) with Creative Cause (6) for the Exacta.
